Mo.Del: Viti-Tunnel Cloud, remote monitoring and control of vineyard covers
Mo.Del builds Viti-Tunnels, retractable covers that protect vines from hail, frost and rain. Each plot is driven by a Tridium Niagara Edge 10 controller, reachable only on site or through a slow vendor tool. Kapsloc built Viti-Tunnel Cloud: a web and mobile platform that monitors every plot of an estate in real time and lets growers deploy or retract the covers remotely, in under two seconds.
The context
We started with a Python BACnet/IP driver that reads weather sensors (temperature, rain, wind, hail, frost), trigger thresholds, the position and fault code of each row, and sends control commands: deploy, retract, stop, fault reset, auto/manual switch. Measured performance: under 2 seconds per request, against about 45 seconds with the vendor tool.
On top of it, Viti-Tunnel Cloud is a three-part monorepo: a Python worker polling the controllers and writing to PostgreSQL with TimescaleDB for history, a real-time Fastify API (REST and WebSocket, JWT authentication, four role levels, strict per-organisation multi-tenancy), and a Next.js application installable as a PWA on mobile with push notifications: plot list, row status, weather, alerts, settings, customer administration for Mo.Del.
The whole chain ships with unit tests, end-to-end tests, production containers, an operations runbook and a user manual.
A grower with several plots had to travel, or go through Niagara Workbench with response times around 45 seconds per request, to know the state of the rows and act before a storm. Mo.Del wanted to offer its customers a modern, multi-estate monitoring service with alerts, without replacing the controllers already installed.
The constraint: speak the Edge 10's BACnet/IP natively, respect its automatic safeties (frost, hail, rain and wind always override a manual command) and work on sites connected over 4G.
